Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

The final book I read for 2022 was Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus and I have no hesitation in saying that I unknowingly saved the best for last. Lessons in Chemistry is about a female chemist, Elizabeth Zott in the 1960’s who faces every kind of discrimination and degradation in her field of study and in life simply because she is a woman. While that sounds discouraging it’s anything but. This novel is fun and humorous and most captivating. Elizabeth’s uncommon approach to life and her unwillingness to be told no is refreshing and encouraging and perhaps even a reminder or a nudge to all women reading this in the present day. While I love the story and I mean I really LOVE this story I am revitalized learning that this amazing story being translated and topping lists all over the world is a debut novel by a sixty-five-year-old woman. Cheers to Bonnie Garmus and to her brilliant work. Not only does her novel inspire, so does her story.
