Sandwich by Catherine Newman

Since visiting Cape Cod over a year ago I’ve been drawn to stories set there. The sixty-five-mile-long peninsula that extends into the ocean is a favorite among writers. If you’ve been to the Cape, it’s easy to see why. If you haven’t, the stories set there are like gorgeous postcards beaconing you to visit. Sandwich by Catherine Newman is one of these beautiful postcards.

Sandwich by Catherine Newman follows Rocky and her family on their week vacation in the town of Sandwich while they reconnect in the same cozy but cramped beach cottage they’ve rented for twenty years. Their comfort with each other, their love of the rented cottage, and the familiarity they have for the town of Sandwich are a perfect backdrop for recalling and sometimes revealing stories and secrets for the first time.

Sandwich by Catherine Newman is an emotionally powerful story about family, choices, and feeling wedged between the two. It is told from Rocky’s perspective with humor about middle age and the sentimentality of child-raising that will have the reader laughing on one page and crying on the next. I chose this book because of the title, I loved it because of the story.
