Bossypants by Tina Fey

I love a good memoir.

Humor only adds to the already enjoyable experience. Tina Fey’s Bossypants is exactly that kind of book, I think of it as a humoir. (That’s not a word, yet, but it could be. Humoir: a funny memoir.)

I immediately felt close to this story having grown up in Delaware County, Pennsylvania (Delco to those who know and love us) at the same time as Tina Fey. (If I had signed up for that acting camp we might have been friends.) Tina pulls the reader in on page one with her humorous stories about her childhood, then entertains with her relatable coming of age mishaps and retells of her journey (literally in a van) to become a comedian. Tina Fey’s story resonates because of her relatability and likability (she feels like a friend) and the book is thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining because of her ability to laugh at herself (and others of course). Her comedic style delivers even on the page and was so funny that I found myself having to stop reading to enjoy the laugh. I don’t know of any book that has made me giggle that much. Even with all the hysterical laugh out loud pauses I flew through it in a blink.

Col and Car see Tina and Amy at the Restless Leg Tour

Last week my best friend and I went to see Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Atlantic City. We dubbed it “The besties seeing the besties” and it was fantastic! Even a false alarm emergency evacuation out of the Hard Rock halfway through did not dampen the mood or their comedic delivery. I felt instantly connected to Tina (again) when she donned a Flyers t-shirt and gushed over a Delco adored pizza place, Pica’s pizza. (Yes, Tina, I was the one screaming Pica’s from section 217). Tina’s response to the audience question about a favorite sports moment (The Phillies 1980 World Series Championship win) gave me chills and left me with no doubt that we absolutely would have been friends because I used to drive by #20’s house too(before they called it stalking). Tina and Amy put on a great show. They transcended the stage, the lights and the glitteryness conveying a sense of comedic friendship with each other and everyone in the audience (even without the Delco connection) making it a memorable and most enjoyable night.

Some takeaways:

First, is the book, Bossypants by Tina Fey. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to claim Delco as your home (pronounced like dome, very long o) it is an extremely amusing and entertaining memoir- or humoir- let’s use it. Maybe it will catch on.

Second, if you can see the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Show entitled “Restless Leg” GO! (sounds like bow, long o with a wa at the end) and be prepared to laugh, a lot.

Third, laughing alongside your bestie of thirty-seven years is a far better elixir than any age cream, line reducing potion or vitamin you can buy. Laughter has no accent and no translation needed (even in Delco at the WAWA). Thank you Tina and Amy but most of all thank you, Car. Your are my Amy, my best friend.
