I’ve discovered a new way to read…

There are times when I find that it’s hard to get my reading done. Times when my kids are home, things are particularly busy, or the demands on my time are high. It’s often around the holidays but it can be anytime that life gets busy really. I’ll see my books. That lovely stack of to be reads leaning slightly to the left on the table next to my comfy reading chair and (although pretty) the scene creates a sort of anxiety. Now, the last thing I need when I’m feeling crunched for time is to see my books as something that makes me anxious. My books are my friends, my anti-anxiety zen, but somehow when I’m busy and I don’t have time to read (the horror!) seeing the dust settle on the growing TBR can make me anxious.

So, what do I do? Well, this year I’ve found a new way to read. (What, there’s a new way to read?) Well, yes, kind of. (Do tell!) Well, I heard a friend talk about how she loves listening to audiobooks, so I decided to give it a try. I was skeptical at first, I mean, I LOVE BOOKS. Right? I love the feel of them, the smell of them and of course I love to underline and highlight sections and quotes that I love. But she swears by them and she’s a smart lady, so I gave it a try.

Let me tell you folks, it’s a GAME CHANGER! Not only have I listened to three books in the past three weeks, I have also done it while doing everything else that December demands. Driving, shopping, cooking, cleaning, vacuuming, walking the pup, walking me, baking, wrapping, and decorating. And I would not have been able to read a book while doing any of these things. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m still reading (when everyone else is asleep) but the audiobook idea has made me a much happier person while I’m doing all the other stuff that has to be done.

So, how do you do this too? Well, I discovered this great company called Libro.fm They are an online bookstore for audiobooks AND they support local bookstores. Today I’m working, shopping, baking, and doing laundry all while solving a murder mystery with The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. Who knew laundry could be so much fun!
