“Dogs are better than human beings because they know but do not tell.” Emily Dickinson

“Show don’t tell.” Was the first advice I remember hearing when I started writing and it confused me. Then I saw this quote and for some reason it clicked. Emily Dickinson’s observation is spot on even though it was probably intended to be more about the loyalty of dogs than the Art of writing. Dogs never speak to us, never tell us but they do show us. They express their love and excitement with their wide eyes, their wagging tails and perked up ears. (Okay and maybe a little barking.) This is Rosie and she speaks volumes to me every day (can you tell?). I wonder if this is the look I give her when she interrupts my writing. Today is her birthday and of course she has no idea so it will be up to me to show not tell today.
